Cantonese Opera film All Because of a Smile
Yeung Yuet-lau chances on Fan Bing-ying, the maidservant of county magistrate Man Sau-lim and instantly recognises her lovely smile with deep dimples as his lover from teenage years. No sooner, the woman is taken as his concubine. Yuet-lau falls victim to a murder-for-money scheme hatched by his debt-ridden uncle Yeung To-mong, who frames the concubine for murder by turning Man's credit letter and the loan prepared for the magistrate placed in her safekeeping against her favour. Fan, who refuses to disclose the source of the money in order to save the reputation of the magistrate, the judge presiding over the case, is sentenced to life imprisonment and gives birth to a son named Siu-lau inside the prison cell. To-mong and Yuet-lau's wife hire a hit man to rid of the witness and her newborn. Raging about his wife's fraud to borrow in his name, the magistrate thwarts the attempt, rescues Siu-lau and kills his own wife. 18 years later, the newly crowned imperial scholar Siu-lau redresses his mother's grievance by staging a trial disguising as the fierce spirit of the deceased to get a confession from the murderer.
