The preservation of Cantonese Opera as a legacy and its continuum in Hong Kong have been made possible through the hard work, experimentation and promotional efforts of generations of Cantonese Opera virtuosi and enthusiastic academics. Coming from different backgrounds, they share the same fervent interest in Cantonese Opera and have contributed tremendously to this cultural gem. In this series, we will look back upon the life and times of five of these esteemed predecessors. They are: Lai Kin, seasoned music critic and curator of programmes who had a strong music background himself; Leung Hon-wai, a lead actor in Cantonese Opera and an all-round expert on the art form, in particular the percussion ensemble; Yu Mo-wan, a highly esteemed chronicler of the history of Cantonese Opera and Hong Kong films; and Yip Shiu-tak and So Yung, two librettists who penned some of the best works in Cantonese Opera in Hong Kong. Although they are no longer with us today, the path they had paved and the work they had done would be forever there to guide the later generations.
