Symposium

A Symposium on Leng Chi Pak – the ‘One and Only’ in Cantonese Opera

Leng Chi Pak’s impressive routine in The Joint Investiture of Six States is no doubt a collective memory of ours. Leng, endearingly known as ‘Uncle Four’, was firmly established as the ‘male lead martial roles’ as early as the 1920’s. His stylized movements such as ‘flicking beard’, the art of ‘leg choreography’, the commanding stage presence in paichang (formulaic plays), and his unique, husky voice have etched an indelible mark of distinction in Cantonese Opera culture.
